Seville Friday night !

Oh wow you shoulda seen these guys !
Cuerpo Mente Alma.
Body Mind Soul.
Boy did they give the stage of the Teatro Lope de Vega a thrashing.
Three dancers, each with a distinguished solo career come together to produce the performance Body Mind and Soul.
Karime Amaya, Jesus Carmona and Paloma Fantova
From a standing start of calm, when they appeared as silhouettes on the stage, they launched straight in to the dance.
From zero to a 100% intensity in the blink of an eye.
Stomping, twirling and throwing themselves at the music.
A photographic nightmare scenario – one couldn’t predict  where on the darkened stage something would happen or who would be doing it.
They each bring their own style to this ensemble performance, but one thing seems clear from their dance and their expressions – they’re angry about something and you don’t want to get in the way of an angry flamenco dancer.
I hope they don’t share a room together; this much passion in a box would go nuclear in a moment.
Hats off to them for their performance.
Loved it.

RANT
Once again though the lighting director had it in for the stills photographers.
Levels of course were low – that’s just accepted now. We all just wind up the ISO settings on our cameras and live with the reduced picture quality of the images.
But he went for DRAMA and of course, given the subject, who could blame him.
These dancers are nothing if not dramatic.
But shooting fast action in pools of light when you only have a 5 minute performance to work with is fraught. I’ve stopped using my camera in single shot mode, I have moved onto the dreaded continuous mode now, so if I sense a picture is in the making I can fire a burst of 4 or 5 shots and hope I get the right moment. Not how I was taught to take pictures !
The lighting came straight down from the ceiling with the merest amount of frontal lighting when the director deemed it worthwhile.
This is great for the videographers who are there to capture the movement and the sound, not so good for the stills guys who have to capture moments that encapsulate that spirit.
That’s why it’s a different skill.
